Understanding Your 2026 Tax Position
New Zealand's tax year runs from 1 April to 31 March, and for 2025/26 the five income tax brackets remain 10.5%, 17.5%, 30%, 33% and 39%, with thresholds of $15,600, $53,500, $78,100 and $180,000. Most salary and wage earners never file a return — their employer deducts PAYE, ACC levies, KiwiSaver, and student loan repayments from each pay, and IRD automatically assesses the year-end result using data from employers, banks, and investment providers. You generally only need to file a return if you are self-employed, earn rental or overseas income, have been asked by IRD to file, or want to claim a refund or a credit such as the independent earner tax credit. The guides below walk through each situation in plain language, with the rates and thresholds that apply from 1 April 2025 and the changes arriving from 1 April 2026.
Key 2025/26 Tax Facts at a Glance
- Tax-free threshold: the first $15,600 of income is taxed at just 10.5%; the top rate of 39% applies only above $180,000.
- PAYE: income tax, ACC earner levy (1.67% in 2025/26, capped at earnings of $152,790), KiwiSaver (3% default until 31 March 2026) and student loan deductions (12% above $24,128) are all withheld from your pay.
- Provisional tax: if your residual income tax exceeds $5,000, you pay three instalments (28 August, 15 January, 7 May) and interest on underpayments is 8.72% for the 2025/26 year.
- Filing deadline: the 2025/26 return (or automatic assessment) is due 7 July 2026; with a tax agent you have until 31 March 2027.
- KiwiSaver: from 1 April 2026 the default contribution rate rises from 3% to 3.5%, and from 1 July 2025 the government's member tax credit was halved to a maximum of $260.72 per year.
What Changed From 1 April 2026
The 2026/27 tax year brings several changes worth planning for. The default KiwiSaver rate rises to 3.5% for both employees and employers (you can apply for a temporary reduction back to 3% for 3-12 months), and 16- and 17-year-olds become eligible for employer contributions for the first time. The adult minimum wage rises to $23.95 per hour. Working for Families changes: the abatement rate moves from 27% to 27.5% with a higher abatement threshold (around $44,900 of family income), and Best Start becomes income-tested from the first year for babies born on or after 1 April 2026. The income tax brackets themselves are unchanged at the time of writing — but check back each Budget, because thresholds and rates are reviewed annually.
